Weber calls for a switch to an ‘EU war economy’. The leader of the conservative EPPfaction in the European Parliament: companies could switch from producing civilian industrial goods to weapons

With regard to the ‘war economy’ he called for, Weber said that this meant, for example, accelerated approval procedures for armaments and more cooperation between European armaments manufacturers. ‘But it could also mean that arms manufacturers will work in shifts at weekends in the future and that companies that have previously manufactured industrial goods for civilian purposes will start producing weapons,’ he said. In an interview with Welt am Sonntag, the CSU politician also called for the appointment of a European chief of defence.

In addition, Europe needs a common European military command, Weber said. A European chief of defence should then ‘be able to command the rearmed national armies and make clear statements on procurement,’ the EPP faction leader demanded.
